Our Story Unfolded

Street Medicine Coalition (SMC) is a student organization originating at Creighton University Phoenix Regional Campus, encompassing all healthcare professionals from this institution. Our mission is to connect with, understand, and build lasting relationships with the homeless, unhoused, and impoverished communities.

By partnering with universities and colleges in the Phoenix area, such as University of Arizona – Street Medicine Phoenix, Mayo Clinic, and local community organizations, we aim to address the needs of these communities without imposing our own expectations.

Every SMC member will gain experience in caring for the whole person, understanding individual and community needs, and reflecting on how their participation will influence their future interactions in society, daily life, and within healthcare.

Thank you to all our M1s that came out to our Naloxone Kit Making event yesterday! Together, our volunteers put together 500 harm reduction kits for @sonoranpreventionworks to be distributed to the community.

SMC's summer clinics have been in full swing! ☀️ Our shining volunteers have been braving the Phoenix heat to provide compassionate care to our community. If you're in town for the summer and want to get involved, reach out to our team! We have ongoing clinics with @streetmedphx and Homeless Matters and always welcome helping hands. 💛

Congratulations to our rising M2 Milan for receiving SMC's Outstanding Service Award. Milan's commitment to service in the past year is a true reflection of compassion, consistency, and leadership. He is always showing up for our community and inspiring others to do the same. We are grateful for our outstanding volunteers like Milan!

As the academic year comes to an end, SMC is proud to reflect on how many individuals in our community we've reached with our clinics over the past months. Thank you to all of our compassionate and dedicated medical student, PA student, nursing student, and faculty volunteers—your commitment makes every clinic possible!

A special shoutout to our new leadership team that has been working hard behind the scenes to keep our clinics organized and running smoothly. We’re excited for our upcoming summer clinics and welcoming new volunteers in the fall!

February recap ✨ Last month marked a few milestones for Street Med: we launched our new clinic at SVdP's dining room and our new optometry team at our SVdP clinics. We're transitioning to our new leadership team and are excited for what's ahead! As always, we greatly appreciate all our volunteers and their enthusiasm for bringing care to the Phoenix community 🫶

As October 🍁 comes to an end, we want to highlight all of the activities our "Street Med-ers" have been up to!

-M1s have started participating in Street Runs/Clinics!
-We held our second in-person educational event this month with Dr. Tharlson who taught us about wound care and treatment
-This month, SMC held its first and second clinic in the St. Vincent dePaul dining room🎉

We also wanted to highlight a mother (last slide) and her story of loss and her gift of donation:

The mother gave birth to twins, but tragically one passed away after birth due to SIDS. The mother decided to donate the body to science/medical education and the donation was received by Phoenix Children’s Hospital (@phxchildrens) and Creighton (@creighton1878). Later on, the mother received a stack of letters from students and residents thanking her for her donation, and the opportunity to learn and practice lifesaving procedures that can save the lives of future newborns. Each letter was so greatly appreciated and meant more to her than words could express. Creighton now holds a special place with her and her family, and we are thankful to her for sharing her story with us at the SVdP clinic.

The Supreme Court is poised to confront an intriguing case that may alter the legal landscape regarding the treatment of the homeless community.

Grants Pass has enacted a law prohibiting individuals from sleeping outside, imposing fines on violators (predominantly the homeless community). Now, the Supreme Court will weigh in on whether such penalties constitute cruel and unusual punishment for a community often forced to sleep outdoors not by choice.

Jessica only makes a total of $60 a week for 2 plasma donations ($240/mo or $2.880/yr) plus anything her husband brings in from his part-time, minimum wage job... That's pretty easy to burn through with 2 little kids at home!

Today we are starting a new Post Series to share stories and information about homelessness and poverty in the US.

New posts will be every Monday night (so you can have some late night reading before bed).

Jessica's story will be shared to kick off the series!

Please share any comments or thoughts you have so we can improve this series in the future. And if you have any books with related topics please share!

This Tuesday we will be making Hygiene Kits for Sonoran Prevention works on Tuesday from 5-8pm in PHSC 104A.

And on Sundays we will be going to Homeless MATters to crochet sleeping mats with the nicest group of people you will meet.

As the first month of the spring semester wraps up, we can look back at all of SMC’s events:

Naloxone Kit Making (1/16) – Students spent their time making 500+ naloxone kits for Sonoran Prevention Works. Helping the organization maintain their supply while they serve the community.

Wound Care Workshop (1/26) – Dr. Erin Tharlson came to Creighton PHX to teach students about different types of wounds we could possibly see on future street runs, and the proper way of treating them.

Sleep Mat Crafting (1/28) – Using recycled plastic bags, we worked with Homeless MATters to make sleeping mats for the homeless community. Providing a clean service to rest their heads at night.

We will be looking forward to February’s events! (announcement coming soon)
