Survey of 30 SMC student volunteers showed that participation in SMC clinics improved students’ confidence in obtaining patient histories and performing physical assessments as well as their understanding of healthcare barriers faced by the unhoused population and what patient-centered care looks like in a real-world setting.
We are so honored to go to a school that centers itself around the Jesuit values of Cura Personalis and Magis. It is instilled in us and becomes our lifeline for the clinical work we do. Day in and day out I rotate through the different specialties and I feel so grateful to know the patients that I care for. But nothing... absolutely nothing compared to what Street Medicine has been for me. The ability to find partnership, solidarity, and human connection with a population of people who have suffered so deeply and differently, yet all get swept into societies cracks alike, is profound. The patients I serve in Street Medicine have strengthened my spirit and will forever shape the physician I will ultimately become.

Physician & Nursing Preceptors participating in SMC clinics
Survey of 4 SMC Preceptors showed that they felt that volunteering as a preceptor positively impacted their teaching skills and ability to mentor medical students in community-based care. They also strongly believe SMC promotes volunteer engagement in Jesuit values and understanding of the healthcare barriers faced by people experiencing homelessness and their unique healthcare needs.
I witness the consistent impact for the clients we serve: Seeing healthcare providers as approachable people who are there to listen and care. The impact for volunteers: Providing care that is client-centered/focused, collaborating with other specialties, expanding knowledge of the healthcare needs of the unhoused, expanding knowledge of the resources available within our own community, and so much more!
