Creighton SOM, Phoenix
Mission Outreach Selective (MOS) Information
What is MOS?
Creighton SOM requires all preclerkship students to take 1.5 credit hours or 3 courses of Student Interest Selective (SIS) classes as part of GOLD track. Students are allowed to satisfy one course or 0.5 credits by participating in a Mission Outreach Selective (MOS).

The goal of MOS is for students to better understand health inequities through service in a dedicated setting. Students will study historical frameworks, current health indicators, barriers to health and cultural humility in the community, as well as to identify leaders, stakeholders and collaborative partnerships within the community in which they are working.

Street Medicine Coalition is currently approved as an MOS under the Trauma track!
How do I participate in the Street Med MOS?
-
Register for MOS 581 on OASIS for the session you want to participate in. The registration deadline is around October for the Fall session and around March for the Spring session. If you have difficulties registering, reach out to the M1/M2 Gold Track Curriculum Coordinator
 -
Reach out to the SMC Academic Resource Chair so you can be added to the list of MOS participants.
-
Sign up for Street Runs and other SMC events to get your hours. MOS participants will receive sign up sheets for Street Runs 1 hour EARLY to ensure you are able to get the hours you need. Scheduled dates for each month's Street Runs will be sent out prior to sign ups so you can plan which dates to volunteer on.
What are the requirements?
At the end of the semester you are expected to:
-
Complete 24 service hours. 75% of these hours MUST be community facing (i.e. street runs). Other ways to get hours include: SMC advocacy/educational events, post-street run reflections, watch approved documentaries. Hours from the previous semester can count towards these hours (ex: hours from the summer can be applied in the Fall, and hours from the Fall can be applied to the Spring).
-
Submit a powerpoint or poster presentation addressing a social or structural determinant of health relevant to the unhoused population.
-
Submit a written reflection about your experience volunteering with Street Med.
